The Review

“From adversity, heroes are born”. Steve Gleason has been called a hero for two reasons. The first was how well he played during his football career for New Orleans with the team’s first home game following Hurricane Katrina. As for the second reason was how he handled himself after being diagnosed at the age of 34 with ALS. ALS is also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Doctors usually give people diagnosed with ALS two to five years to live while their body and speech rapidly deteriorate. Instead of giving up hope and on life, Gleason decided to do two things. He created a video blog about who he was and life lessons for his future son while also helping to further awareness and the needs of others fighting ALS. This film is a documentary of Gleason’s life, giving us a raw glimpse of living with ALS. I will tell you now that this is one of the most beautiful stories that I have seen but also one of the most heartbreaking. You will definitely need some tissues handy as you realize everything we take for granted on a daily basis.
