Our lives are made up of stories, stories of our own experiences that we share as well as stories that we’ve heard from others. Kubo is a story teller in his village, the stories that he tells have been told to him by his mother. The entire village is captivated by the stories that Kubo tells, yet inevitably Kubo must head home before finishing the stories, always leaving those listening wanting for more. There is a problem though, even though he ventures into town on a daily basis, there are three rules that he must follow. When he makes a deliberate decision to defy one of the rules, he comes face to face with his worst fear. This encounter will forever change his story. Because of what happened, he must venture forth in search of three (3) things: the sword unbreakable, the breast plate impenetrable and the helmet invulnerable. These items were also pursued by someone close to him, now it is his turn to complete the quest. Along the way, he’ll have some help from an animal and an insect, who each contribute in their own ways. There is something special about this entire journey that will be revealed piece by piece throughout. Some of the content is a bit intense for the youngest of viewers but I think it’s safe to say that this is appropriate for ages of 8+. The basic story is much more than it seems, the message that it delivers is deeper than it may initially seem but it’s well worth it. Stay into the credits to have a glimpse into the making of this classical storyﾠthat we’ve been lucky enough to experience.
