In a time where behavior was a standard, one woman was determined to set herself apart. After the death of her husband, she found herself in a difficult situation. Keeping up appearances needed to come before anything else but that wasn't so easy for her to do with what was known about her. The scandal of it all followed her, no matter how far or fast she ran. The harder she tries to rebuild her life, the deeper she finds herself in the rut that plagues her. She'll find herself in a difficult situation when a romantic interest comes along that complicates matters for her and her daughter. As this plays out, there will be an unexpected surprise that will turn the story on a bit of its own head (yet in the grand scheme, isn't too surprising). As this is set in turn of the century England, there is an heir of adulterous humor that is enjoyable but a little slow at times. Though this is a well portrayed story, it may have been better suited for PBS or BBC rather than the big screen. Throughout it feels overacted and seems as though you're watching a play on stage, where you're just waiting for the curtains to be drawn between scenes. Jane Austen fans will fall in love but anyone else may have a harder time finding the joy in this period piece. Only you can decide if you want to take a chance on this...
