Ian Lightfoot is getting ready for his 16th birthday. He has set goals for himself but finds himself struggling with them. When his mom surprises Ian and his brother (Barley) with a special present their father left for them, it opens up possibilities that were once impossible. When part of the gift doesn't go as planned, Ian and Barley must go on a quest to find the Phoenix Gem in order to complete it.
This quest will lead the boys to test themselves and each other. Along the way, they'll come across some others that could help them along the way (some in unexpected ways). After some harrowing experiences, some family members get involved as well. Ultimately though, it will be up to Ian and Barley to make it happen. Even once they reach the end of the road, the answer won't be readily available.
As the clock is counting down on the time they have left to complete their quest, they will find themselves with a difficult decision to make. Their decision will change their lives but not in the way you'd expect.
This story is full of fantasy, magic, and adventure. It's the first Disney feature film that incorporates RPG's (Role Playing Games). Given the subject matter of the story, it will greatly appeal to some and repel others. Those who love fantasy stories (of all ages) will find something to appreciate here... for those who don't, this might not be for you. Either way, come with a sense of wonder and you'll be surprised.
