How many things are we blind to? How many secrets have our own governments hidden from us out of pride or even for the simple fact that they could? The siege of Jadotville is one of these events. In 1961, during the beginning of a civil war, the United Nations sent Irish peacekeepers to Jadotville located in Congo. They were stationed there to protect the inhabitants from a rising political leader using the lands minerals. Not only were they unwanted but a United Nations advisor launched a military attack against French and Belgian mercenaries causing turmoil for the Irish peacekeepers. These Irish soldiers who had never seen battle were now left under a siege from Katangese and mercenary troops. Following orders with no way out the Irish soldiers fought back against overwhelming enemy numbers.ﾠ They were forced into an impossible battle due to poor leadership from the United Nations and after the battle were treated like cowards all because the government wouldn’t tell the whole story of what happened at the siege of Jadotville.
