The space race was a battle to be the first. There was the first man in space, the first to orbit, and then there was the first to the moon. NASA was determined to succeed at that race. It could only be achieved at a high cost, the cost of human lives. Failing on earth so that they didn't fail once they left earth's atmosphere. Many questioned the program as well as the participants. Was the cost worth it? How many more lives would be lost in the pursuit of something that seemed so unreachable? So many of these questions won't have answers until the mission is a success. The biggest question is... Will it ever succeed? NASA planned for every possible outcome, success, and failure. The crew that was chosen to embark on this journey would face the chance that they could never return. All in an effort to achieve the impossible. This is that story, it's not the story of one man (though much of the movie focuses on one of the astronauts), it's the story of history and what it took to achieve the unimaginable. The telling of the story is a bit slow and seems to focus more on the emotional journey of one of them moreso than the story of the space program itself. Those focused on historical accuracies will be significantly disappointed, but if you can look past all of the inaccuracies, there is a deeper something here. Only you can decide if you want to find out for yourself.
