The Review

To thine own self be true... A famous statement that means many different things to many different people. Ultimately, though, its meaning is stated within itself. This movie is the same way. A young boy growing up in the midst of the hood is desperately trying to find out who he is and where he fits in. His struggles begin at home and those same struggles are only further exasperated outside the home. That is until he meets an unlikely friend who will help him discover something within himself. Because of this new association and some difficult situations along the way, Chiron will begin to find the answers he's so desperately been looking for. The subject matter of this film is approached in such a way that is it not for a younger audience. The language and content make it perfect for some and offensive to others. Wholly honest in its approach, this is everything that Boyhood tried to be. That being said, this pushed its own boundaries, was that to its benefit or to its detriment. Curiosity may draw you in, the story may push some buttons but it's one of those that manages to hit a sore spot for many. Should you take the risk? That's for you to decide.
