The story of Mr. Church is based on a real true life friendship. So who is he? Besides an incredible chef and a babysitter of sorts, there’s some mystery that surrounds who he really is and why he’s there. He arrives to help the mother and daughter while the mother is fighting a seemingly losing battle with cancer. The quiet suspense surrounds Mr. Church’s character throughout the entire movie. He says very little, he has a quiet intelligence about him that comes across without even saying a word. There are moments we see his “secret life” overlap with theirs as he comes in the house besides himself, but entering the kitchen in the morning is like a brand new day and the Mr. Church we’ve come to know and love is there with a smile making them breakfast. We do get glimpses of what his secret life outside their house is about, but the mystery keeps us intrigued to know more. Eddie Murphy’s performance is incredible and the emotional bond formed between Mr. Church and the daughter is very touching. It’s a very emotional movie with a lot of heart. It’s simply a beautiful movie on the bonds of friendship through anything. This is a movie that needs to be seen and experienced.
