First dates are awkward. When is a first date even more awkward than usual? When it's not a date at all. That's how this story begins, two colleagues decide to attend a community meeting together, one of them takes it as a date while the other wants to keep it professional. As their non-date continues, their discussion covers many subjects. Considering they're two colleagues out on a non-date, the topics get more and more personal. It seems like the further it goes, the more they open up about their personal and private lives. When it's finally time for the meeting, one of them will stand out amongst the crowd. Will that impact how the rest of the day will go? That, you probably know the answer to... Considering who this movie is based upon, but this story gives us an intimate look into their lives before anything else got in the way. It expresses their personal and political leanings in a not so typical fashion. At the same time showing you that they're human. Most of the content is heavy handed re: race relations at the time (whether or not that is an accurate depiction is continually up for debate), though it still manages to convey who they are. Is it an accurate description? I'm sure that the writer(s) portrayed the Obama's to the best of their ability. This is an intimate look into a never before side of the Obama's that we've never seen before. Is it the beginning of a whole new future or the beginning of the end... That's for you to decide.
We Real Cool
by Gwendolyn Brooks
We real cool,
We left school,
We lurk late,
We strike straight,
We sing sin,
We thin gin,
We jazz June,
We die soon.
