We all have loyalties that we abide by. Loyalties to friends, loyalties to family and others that might not seem so obvious. These by nature can make or break us. That's what James "Whitey" Bulger learned the hard way in South Boston. He was a true kingpin in his region, those that knew him, knew to fear him. Is it loyalty though if it's based in fear? That's a hard question to ask or answer. In 1975, Whitey had a chance to be an informal informant for the FBI. This story details what went down as he was a self described affiliate of the FBI but never a "rat"... The ones that were "rats" always had to look over their shoulder because they never knew when they'd pay for what they shared... Time was not their friend. This alliance helped the FBI, DEA and Whitey himself. Unfortunately, some things didn't add up as time went on and things started to fall apart. True crime buffs know how this story ended but they don't necessarily know what happened... This fills in those gaps. As for the story itself, Depp was stunning in this character, although he was as out of character as Gyllenhaal was in Nightcrawler (albeit a good thing). Whitey's story was well developed, the story focused a bit much on the FBI for a story based on Bulger but since it was more about the sting as a whole... It works.
