James Brown, the man behind the music. We know the music... but who was the man? This audio and visual archive of his life gives us a view into what made him who he was. We see a boy from a broken family, subjected to abuses and horrors that no child should endure. That same boy learns to survive in circumstances beyond his control. Some say we are what we are because of how we were raised. If that is indeed the case, it would explain a lot. At least in his case. James Brown and his music transformed everything we listen to today. As wonderful as his influence was, it was equally as dark. His life began with great difficulties, he took those difficulties and transformed them into impulses. Impulsive behavior made him what we know but it also destroyed him. He did as much to advance civil rights as he did to make those issues carry through the generations. Even as he relished in the successes and starlight, he made choices to discriminate against himself and others. His life in the end was full of heartache and loss. Most of which was brought on by his own behavior, no one can deny his impact on music, but we can question anything beyond that. A talented, creative singer on one side and an abusive, cold, separatist on the other... James Brown... The man behind the legend... Are you ready? Though this is rated PG-13, it should be rated R with the language and violence throughout.
